The music of the Sephardim has its roots in the musical traditions of medieval Jewish communities in the Iberian peninsula. Following the expulsion from Spain in 1492 and from Portugal in 1496, Sephardic culture picked up influences from their new host societies, primarily Morocco, Turkey, and Bulgaria. While many of the lyrics were preserved, melodies and instrumentation varied widely. This program brings together research into these communities, their language, and their musical practices. Come hear the moving poems and haunting melodies of the Sephardim!

Light refreshments will be served.
