ONEG & KIDDUSH
After Shabbat services, we enjoy each other’s company over refreshments. This is called an oneg on Friday evenings and a kiddush on Shabbat afternoon. Lingering in this moment helps us to slow down and fulfill the mitzvah of embracing the peace and joy of Shabbat, our sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It’s also a great time to catch up with friends and get to know other people in our community.
Beth Shalom relies on members to make these moments special, so we hope you will sign up to host (provide the snacks for) an oneg or kiddush.
WHY SHOULD I HOST AN ONEG or kiddush?
There are endless reasons, including:
→ You’re celebrating a birth, adoption, birthday, bet mitzvah, conversion, engagement, wedding, anniversary, or graduation...
→ You’d like to thank or honor someone...
→ You’re remembering a loved one on their yahrzeit...
→ You achieved a personal goal or milestone...
→ Someone got a job or promotion or recognized for their work...
→ Your club or committee has news to share or achievements to celebrate…
→ You tried out a new brownie recipe...
→ You made it through the week...
→ It's Shabbat!
HOW DO i HOST AN ONEG or KIDDUSH?
First, sign up for a date! Let us know if there’s a special reason and we’ll include that in our newsletter and announcements.
Then all you need to do is bring snacks to share with about 20 people. Want some ideas? Bring whatever you personally like to nosh on, or if you’re remembering/honoring someone, perhaps their favorite food? Baked goods are always a hit (whether store-bought or homemade). Other popular options include fruit, nuts or trail mix, pita and hummus, crackers and dip, cheese, veggies, and juice. Please stick to pareve or dairy foods only (no meat or gelatin, but fish and eggs are okay). Wine and challah will be provided for kiddush, though you are welcome to bring these, too.
Logistics: Staff will have a table set up with plates, forks, napkins, water, etc. You can put your food there before the service or keep things in the fridge until it’s time to eat. You may use platters and utensils from the kitchen. If you have trouble finding anything, just ask our door monitor. The door monitor will help clean up after people are done snacking; please take home your leftovers or let the door monitor know if they can be saved for another gathering.
